in 1967, terry riley created a piece around the pop song you‘re no good by the harvey averne dozen. it has three very distinct parts: a synthesizer intro, the song (unprocessed), and a tape-collage of fragments of the song.

re: also takes a pop songs as it’s starting point, but in this case it was written and recorded for the purpose of this composition only. the song echoes the sound of the 1960s in a retro but electronic way. like in you’re no good, the lyrics stay within the boundaries of the expectable. “you’re no good” becomes “you’re so good” and the perspective shifts from the leaving person to the left behind person. in that sense, not only the piece in its entirety is an answer to terry riley’s piece, the song within the piece is also an answer to the harvey averne dozen’s song.
